Deterrence is the capability of applying preventative measures, that are specially designed, to prevent adversarial escalation of any nature, which may be to the detriment of peace.

Over the last few years, it became apparent that the use of deterrence can be used not only to strengthen the defence sector, it can also be used to tackle threats to public safety and security within a state. The education sector plays a significant part in long term deterrence strategies.

Modern, complex, and ever-evolving threats to public safety and democracy are utilising a growing number of modern culture, technologies, freedoms and generally taking advantage of globalisation.

Deterrence Center considers solutions to tackle threats such as organised crime, cyber crime, hate crime, radicalisation and extremism before they evolve. We develop strategies and tactics form a theoretical, methodological and operational viewpoint.

We merge the quality of academic methodologies and outputs with the pedagogic, developmental and interpersonal nature of the education establishments.

It is of crucial importance to develop deterrence strategies that are fit for the threats of our contemporary and interconnected world, and capabilities that have a power to prevent adversarial actions.

We help to develop deterrence strategies that are focused on pre-emption, detection, analysis, risk assessment and management to build and shape capabilities that tackle threats before they become actionable.

Crimes have expanded in their scope and scale due to a number of reasons, which are often formally and informally discussed within the sector.

Criminal behaviours have also fluctuated - some decriminalised, others further regulated.

Deterrence Center provides research, analysis, training and consultancy to aid not only understanding of the complex criminal threats, but also aids in the development of multi-disciplinary pro-active solutions to stop these threats from escalating.

We provide training programmes and tailored courses that include familiarisation with modern topics and trends, neurodiversity, and educating against racism, misogyny, and other outdated harmful beliefs.

TO EDUCATE AND TRAIN STUDENTS AND STAFF

We deliver tailored education and training programmes to staff and students on complex, often challenging topics.

By educating, raising awareness and understanding of modern threats such as radicalisation, extremism and terrorism, gangs and organised crime, cyber crime, hate crime etc., we believe that a reduced number of individuals will be willing to engage in criminal activities.

We provide tailored training programmes and short courses to lecturers, teachers and all members of staff, so the can become familiar with different strategies and tactics on how to spot signs, be resilient and resourceful, and keep self and others safe. TO ADVISE ON CAPABILITY BUILDING

Deterrence Center provides advice on a variety of approaches, tools and training to increase the multifaceted deterrence capability.

We analyse and develop detailed profiles of adversaries, and propose ways of de-escalation of tensions.

We also tailor a range of long and short term deterrence strategies and tactics are modeled and tested. This modus operandi is an on-going process to ensure that:

Capabilities are strong, versatile and resilient.
Capabilities of adversaries and their allies are known in advance, and therefore different deterrence strategies can be discussed.
The likelihood of escalation is analysed and managed.
Capabilities are shaped in order to deter, discourage, or dissolve the threat, before it materialises.

PREVENT(ing) Radicalisation and Extremism

This training programme was specially designed for the educators.

With the recent developments and climate surrounding the Prevent duty, we designed a special training programme for lecturers, teachers and members of staff. There are two parts of this training- one provides knowledge and understanding of the signs of radicalisation and extremism on local, national, global and cyber levels. The second part is dedicated to building skills that are needed to deal with these situations in an ethical manner. This training programme also addresses the nexus of safeguarding vs. Prevent.

Guest speakers

We deliver academic quality knowledge and understanding, as well as insight and new perspective specially designed for specific levels and audiences. We educate our clients to increase their understanding of deterrence and the benefits of application and implications of deterrence solutions. Learning outcomes of our programmes also build on the cognitive and transferrable skills that are crucial within the sector and beyond.

Short courses and modules for Universities

We deliver tailored courses, training programmes and modules on deterrence, for disciplines such as international relations, criminal justice/criminology, sociology, social work and psychology.

We encourage multi-disciplinary research partnerships - within universities, as well as multi-university collaboration to maximise the expertise pool, critical thinking, knowledge transfer and recommendations.
